The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.
Tiara is a fresh and elegant white wine from the Douro Valley. The slow fermentation and the altitude of the vines give elegance and freshness, whilst the age of the vines (an average of 60 years) is responsible for its concentration.
The 2017 vintage begins with a bouquet of white fruit, blossoms, and mineral notes. On the palate, the wine shows an impressive balance, structure, and vibrant acidity. This wine is delicate, light, and linear. Given the long fermentation in barrels, the wine has a subtle and reserved aromatic profile that slowly unfolds in the glass with time and air, revealing its full complexity and character. The finish is elegant, long, and filled with minerality.
This wine is an absolute pleasure to drink when young, especially after decanting. However, it also promises fantastic ageing potential.
