The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.
At Niepoort, they aim to create a light, fine wine with great energy. Tiara is made from grapes that come from vines over 60 years old, planted 600 meters above sea level, with Códega do Larinho being the dominant grape variety.
The long fermentation process in barrels gives Tiara 2013 a very complex, deep, and mineral aroma, with very discreet notes of stone fruits, citrus, and light medicinal notes. The wine is very vibrant in the mouth, with a unique style where sugar and acidity are in perfect harmony. It is fresh, light, and very accurate, with a strong mineral element. The finish is full of energy and citrus notes.
Tiara is a wine that is a pleasure to drink while young to feel all the energy, but it also aged beautifully after 10 years in the bottle.
