Lebanon
Lebanon has been producing wine for over 7000 years and is saturated in history. Some of the modern-day wineries found in the Bekaa Valley have been working since the 1850s when they were initially cultivated and run by Monks. With a French influence, you will see lots of traditional-style wines such as Syrah, but also there is a high demand for native Lebanese varieties. Lebanon is situated at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea, where it borders Syria and Israel. The country’s dry, sunny climate is ideal for grape growing. The snowcapped Lebanon Mountains provide protection for the vines grown in high-altitude vineyards of the Bekaa Valley, some are grown at more than 3,000 feet. Whereas in the warmer southern parts of Lebanon such as Batroun, an area north of Beirut, the vineyards are cooled by the Mediterranean Sea. A country that has seen many hardships; civil war, political unrest and financial disaster, however, continues to produce complex and powerful wines that express rich tannins and spices.
