Tempranillo
Tempranillo is the most famous red grape variety in Spain where it is mostly known for its dominant contribution to Rioja, and its also hugely popular in Portugal. It comes under many synonyms such as Tinta Roriz and Aragonéz. It has high levels of acidity and tannins which lend it well to oak ageing, which influenced the maturation system in Rioja works, with an indication of how long a wine has spent in oak barrels (minimum of 12 months), resulting in smooth, full-bodied wines with rich wood, cedar and vanilla notes. Throughout Spain and Portugal, you will find many different expressions of Tempranillo, ranging from red fresh fruits to stewed ripe dark fruits. Styles can be complex and layered or they can be fruit driven, It can also produce a bright, fragrant and delicate Rosé. Tempranillo is versatile and delicious, and it pairs excellently with a Mediterranean feast.
