Slovenia
Slovenia’s wine production dates back to pre-Roman times, with some of the oldest vines in the world, one being 450 years old. 75% of the wine produced is white, and although there is now more of a focus on native varieties such as Rebula (Ribolla Gialla), a fragrantly chamomile and citrus wine, predominantly European varieties such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are produced. However, with 52 native varieties to pick from, there is an array of wines reflecting the Mediterranean climate and soul of Slovenia. Slovenia is famed for orange wine and non-intervention wine, these styles became popular again in the 1990s, and they lend to a sustainable and minimalistic approach which fully expresses the characteristics of the wine.
