The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.
In 2012 Dirk went to the Dão region to see a very old, almost 100-year-old vineyard with granite soil and mixed varieties; almost like love at first sight! After a healthy discussion, Niepoort were able to buy the grapes and make their first iteration of this fine red wine.
This 2014 was the third vintage of this wine. Light in colour, it offers a fine and complex aroma. It shows a very fresh mineral character, with wild berries, pepper, clove, and a hint of reduction. With medium concentration, it is appellative in the mouth with fresh fruit, vibrant acidity and silky tannins. A light, elegant, fresh and balanced wine with a lingering and very delicate finish. Suggest to be served in Burgundy glasses.
