The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.
In 2012 Dirk went to the Dão region to see a very old, almost 100-year-old vineyard with granite soil and mixed varieties; almost like love at first sight! After a healthy discussion, Niepoort were able to buy the grapes and make their first iteration of this fine red wine.
As the rare second vintage of this wine, the 2013 vintage is light in colour with violet shades. The nose is layered with a fresh mineral aroma, a hint of reduction and spice notes. With medium concentration, it opens up in the mouth with fresh fruit, wild berries and silky tannins, lifted with a long, deep and delicate finish.
