Double Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State

£24.50

While Double Canyon’s latitude is almost the same as Bordeaux, the landscape is not. Vines are grown on sandy desert terrain. characterized by low rainfall, sandy loam soils, tumbleweeds and sagebrush.

This Cabernet hits you with an enticing array of ripe red and black plums, blackberries and fresh red cherries. The nose gives delicate a sense of spiced rose petal and a touch of raspberry compote. The addition of Syrah and small amounts of other grapes provide a richer texture; the soft mouthfeel is supported by the complexity of sweet oak tannins and fresh, silky, long finish.

    About the producer:
In 2005, Crimson Wine Group set-out at their goal of creating certified sustainably grown, exceptional wines with complexity and distinction from the top quality areas of America’s wine regions.

Their vineyards are planted densely at about 1,850 plants per acre, double the norm in order to crowd the soil and achieve less fruit per vine. Producing less fruit increases overall quality, as all of the plant’s resources are concentrated into fewer clusters. Long sunny days set in contrast to cool evening temperatures resulting from their sites proximity to the river create optimal grape growing conditions. The result is exceptionally high-quality fruit from which we create wines that capture the distinctive traits of the soil, the land and the conditions of the site. They are now certified as LIVE sustainable.

Here is a quick note from Kate Michaud, winemaker regarding her ethos on winemaking, sustainability and responsibilities as a steward of the environment. You can see why her wines align exactly to the Wanderlust ethos of what we source and why:

”I like to think of winemaking as capturing the full potential of the grapes and the site without any funny business. No enzymes or fining or additives that manipulate, just the raw materials and some yeast and sulfur. Well, except oak. I think of oak in a different category that while it impacts the way a wine reads it isn’t bending a wine into a place it wasn’t.  We don’t subscribe to the scorched earth vineyard philosophy. We do not want to deplete our soil, rather want it to be microbially diverse because that is responsible for our terroir. Biodiversity in soil shows up in wine. We like to have no tillage in the tractor row, only the vine row. In other words, leave the space between the rows wild and only worry about competition directly under the vines, but instead of spraying, till”.
