Vintage Niepoort Conciso Tinto 2012

The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.

In 2012 Dirk went to the Dão region to see a very old, almost 100-year-old vineyard with granite soil and mixed varieties; almost like love at first sight! After a healthy discussion, Niepoort were able to buy the grapes and make their first iteration of this fine red wine.

This 2012 is the very rare first vintage of this wine.

It has a very fresh aroma with hints of spices and some floral notes. The wine is deep and complex, with an intense mineral profile that comes from cooler regions. The palate is harmonious, with a good balance of acidity and alcohol. The tannins are fine and delicate. Its concentration structure and mineral freshness make this wine very easy to drink yet with complexity.

A light, elegant, and very fresh wine with a long finish. Unlike heavy and powerful wines, it was created to be delicate and fine, with plenty of life ahead.
