Carmelo Santana is the new kid on the block for Canary Island wine. Hailing from Gran Canaria, Bien de Altura focuses on preserving local grapes and reviving ancient abandoned vineyards. The grapes for the Ikewen are sourced from old vines (average 80 + years old), growing at 1200-1460m (i.e. very high altitude). This is a bright and delicate red with a real sense of its volcanic place which it transports you to.
The wine possesses taut acidity and palate-cleansing, volcanic mineral freshness. It spends 8 months in oak barrels where it matures, however, the oak influence is hard to detect amongst the incredible sensory journey it takes you on. It is pale ruby in the glass with flavours of juicy cherry, crunchy berries, raspberry, saltwater, cured meats, leather, pepper, pot pourri, graphite, black tea, smoke and violet. It has a medium body with high acidity and subtle tannins.
Bottled unfined, unfiltered with a small amount of SO2, organic and biodynamic (though not certified). The floral, crunchy red fruits alongside spicy, peppery, volcanic mineral complexity of this wine will dazzle you. This is not a wine you will forget!
