Carmelo Santana is the new kid on the block for Canary Island wine. Hailing from Gran Canaria, Bien de Altura focuses on preserving local grapes and reviving ancient abandoned vineyards. Sansofi is from a vineyard of 90-year-old vines at 1400m altitude, a field blend of Listán Negro and a small amount of mixed indigenous white grapes. The grapes were fermented whole-cluster in a single open-top barrel and when pressed, put into old French oak barrels to rest for 8 months.
The wine when opened is initially like a Pinot Noir – soft and gentle red berries and red fruit characters at the front before the freshness and from the high-altitude site provides a burst of mouth-watering crisp cranberry and raspberry. The wine has layers of complexity including a spicy green peppercorn element. Elegant but powerful, incredibly long and juicy, fading to flavours of gentle red fruits and sweet tomato skin.
