Domaine Roulot is renowned for the chiselled precision of the wines it produces, each expressing the intricate differences between appellations and crus. Jean-Marc Roulot has developed a uniquely elegant style that set a new benchmark for Meursault: mineral and restrained rather that the fat and creamy versions of yore. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1999, with some experiments in biodynamics. The use of wood is subtle (only 20 to 30% new oak) and use simply to aerate without imparting flavour. The ultimate goal is to let the character of each plot to come through.
Roulot’s 2016 Bourgogne Blanc delivers much more than its humble village wine appellation might suggest. Lightly perfumed on the nose, the complexity of Roulot’s style is beautifully and calmly conveyed through notes of lemon zest, lime, melon, peach, pineapple, buttered almonds. Elegant structure underpinned by harmonious wet stone minerality. Such a long finish for a wine that, now at 5 years of age, is truly at its peak. Punching well above its weight this Bourgogne Blanc, considered by many to be the finest-value wine in Burgundy today, is increasingly hard to find.
