James Rahn is a former sommelier who gained recognition for his award-winning wine lists in Chicago and Portland. He has since become a winemaker, producing wines in the Oregon region exclusively using single varietals and plot-specific fruits in the cool climate of Willamette Valley. Rahn’s first vintage was released in 2013, using grapes from Maresh vineyard, one of the oldest vineyards in Oregon that was planted in 1970, and RainSong vineyard, planted in 1984. You will find a lot of less popular varietals from his range, such as Mondeuse and Trousseau!
With 18 days of skin contact, the wine shows a golden copper colour from the glass. It opens with aromas of rhubarb, quince, raspberries and orange peel, with a splash of sea spray and sprinkle of baking spice at the end. The juicy palate is bright with tangy acidity that balances well with the note of strawberry and melon. The mineral backbone adds an extra layer to the lingering finish. A complex and textured Pinot Gris that you rarely find in Oregon!
