Wine from an alternative universe? Well, as close as. LAVA is as it says, wine from a place where molten lava once spewed out of a volcano and since provides rock full of minerals for vines to grow in – Gran Canaria.
The way we would describe this wine is “lighter-bodied, fresh, red fruits with a whiff of volcano”. The colour is very light, akin to the tint of cool-climate pinot noir; cherry red with a tinge of darker colour in the centre of the glass. The nose is light, red fruits and red berries with just a touch of volcanic soil sulphur to it. On the palate, this is an easy-drinking, delicious and layered red. Red fruits, redcurrant, cranberry, raspberry blueberry and Christmas spices intermingle with a dry, soft texture and gentle, silky tannins. There is a backbone of refreshing, food-friendly acidity to this wine which comes from the intense minerality of the volcanic soil it is grown on. Moreish and quaffable, it will leave you reaching for the next glass to transport you back to the Canary Islands.
