Domaine Roulot is renowned for the chiselled precision of the wines it produces, each expressing the intricate differences between appellations and crus. Jean-Marc Roulot has developed a uniquely elegant style that set a new benchmark for Meursault: mineral and restrained rather that the fat and creamy versions of yore. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1999, with some experiments in biodynamics. The use of wood is subtle (only 20 to 30% new oak) and use simply to aerate without imparting flavour. The ultimate goal is to let the character of each plot to come through.
Roulot’s reds are very rare and highly sought after. This Auxey-Duresses is a blend from different Premier Cru parcels from some of the best terroirs. This is also his only red premier cru, perfect for those who enjoy an ethereal, mineral-driven Pinot Noir. The nose presents a medley of red berries – cherry, loganberry and crunchy cranberry – laced with exotic notes of dried coriander seeds, liquorice and aniseed. The palate is sleek and harmonious and echoes the taut, crystalline red fruit character with a chalky core that seems effortless. This is great now and will also drink beautifully for at least another 10 years.
