The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.
This is a very rare bottling when in the 1992 vintage, Dirk Niepoort was able to negotiate to bottle a vintage port from the land of Quinta do Passadouro. Bought from a private collector, we only have a few bottles. The 1992 is elegant – good depth, smooth tannins, both primary and secondary fruit flavours where the fruit was changing to ripe plums and candied figs.
