The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.
The 1995 vintage opens with a powerful nose of cherries, olives, herbal notes, chocolate and some coffee. On the palate, it is concentrated, with firm, dry tannins. This structure is framed with savoury notes, bitter cherries and herbs. After more than 25 years of bottle ageing, the oak has milded down and is well-integrated. Tasting like a bone-dry young port, sensational and distinctly Portuguese wine.
This matured Niepoort’s table wine from their early vintage is an extremely rare find. Only limited bottles are available.
