Revealing Rioja’s hidden secrets through craftsmanship
Daniel Rodríguez and Alejandro Estebas started Vinos del Panorámico, determined to find the best-forgotten vineyards in Rioja and bring them to their full expression, focusing on terroir rather than on assumptions about a “Rioja style”. Having decided to call their winemaking facilities an “atelier” (workshop) rather than a cellar, their approach is one of craftsmanship and respect for the raw product they get from the dedicated growers they work with. Each wine is, therefore, a unique and unrepeatable ‘piece’ that transports to the workshop the same artisanal focus with which the vineyards are tended to.
Daniel Rodríguez might be of noble Rioja lineage – his father, Miguel Angel Rodríguez, is the founder of the iconic Vinícola Real, one of the region’s producers that, back in the 1980’s, fought the region’s industrial deluge. But he was determined to transcend a classical approach to winemaking and focus instead on discovering the region’s hidden viticultural landscapes.
Having joined forces with friend Alejandro they started looking for Rioja’s old lost majuelos (extremely small vineyard plots) and studying their specific soils and microclimates. Their ethos is one of observation, respectful learning and experiment: a fundamental part of their work is done through the close relationship they develop with the old growers that, for decades, have tended to these precious vineyards and therefore know them better than anyone else. While exploring the small sub-region of La de Najerilla with its intricate network of valleys and gentle slopes, they have indeed found small treasures with specific aspects, soils and altitudes. In the ‘workshop’ as in the vineyard, the goal is to extract each plot’s essence and soul for a unique Panorama of the true Rioja. Needless to say that winemaking is low intervention, allowing the fruit and landscape to speak for themselves. All wines all fermented spontaneously (with skin maceration in both reds and whites) and with minimal addition of sulphur.

Interesting fact: Daniel Rodríguez and Alejandro Estebas, the two founders and winemakers of Panorámico Wines, have found the palette for their oenological ‘craftwork’ in the sub-region of La de Najerilla, which they now know like the palm of their hands. The area is full of old forgotten vineyards nested in a network of valleys and carefully kept by old understated growers with passion and knowledge.
