The van der Niepoort family are an iconic ‘legacy’ producer in Portugal dating back to 1842. Lesser-known than the big Port houses, in our view they are massively under-rated as a smaller, more precise winery and have a strong link with not just Port but also brilliant dry/table wines from all over Portugal.
Tiara is a fresh and elegant white wine from the Douro Valley. The slow fermentation and the altitude of the vines give elegance and freshness, whilst the age of the vines (an average of 60 years) is responsible for its concentration.
With a profile resembling that of a great Burgundian wine, the Coche is Niepoort’s most coveted and highest-ranking white wine. On the nose, the oak ageing comes through as aromas of hazelnut, honey and brioche which mingle seamlessly with an aromatic base of tangerine, apricot, pineapple and fragrant herbs. The palate offers a Burgundy-like structure – elegant, moderate in alcohol and with plenty of complex aromas. The lingering finish offers a beautiful acidity, indicating excellent ageing potential.
