Kikelet – volcanic wines from Tokaji

Stéphanie Berecz is native from Loire valley is a French enologist who initially came to Hungary to work for a well-known Tokaji region estate. In 2002, she and her husband founded Kikelet (“blooming spring” in the native tongue) in the region of Tokaji. Today, they farm 5 hectares of south/southwest facing vineyards planted half with Furmint, half with Harslevelu and make wines expressing the uniqueness of each of these single vineyard plots.

The soil in Tokaji is volcanic, adding minerality and character. The wines are matured in French and Hungarian oak barrels on their lees. Fermentation occurs with only native yeast in 200-year-old cellars.

With limited yield and carefully selected grapes, the wife and husband team have shown that they can produce some of the best dry Furmint and Hárslevelű wines around.
