Artéis & Co

Vinay, Nr. Epernay, Champagne, France

High-Quality, Artisanal Vintage Champagne

Artéis & Co, with a focus on high-quality, artisanal, vintage champagne, was born in 2013. It is the brainchild of Chef de Cave Fabien Gay (who previously worked at Perrier-Jouët and Mumm) and Jean-Philippe Diot, a grower based in Vinay. Building on their solid experience and knowledge they wanted to build a project that celebrates expression and craftsmanship, rather than being bound by a house style. Their story, albeit brief, is already a successful one: they produce world-class champagnes that rival those of the most prestigious houses for a fraction of the price.

Interesting fact: All the big Champagne houses you find on supermarket shelves, source grapes from a large number of growers and do not have full control of how the grapes are grown or what chemicals the vineyards are treated with. Artéis, on the other hand, only uses grapes from vineyards that are 100% under their own control.

The team at Artéis & Co. works closely together with the artisans-vignerons they source their fruit from, establishing enduring relationships that allow them to oversee all the work that is done in the vineyards. They select small batches of grapes from the best Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites, managed carefully to reduce chemical treatments as much as possible. The production stages have been refined to include two stages of fermentation in the bottle. The sugar and CO2 levels are kept to an absolute minimum for a pure, natural expression of Champagne.

How we found them/How Richard found them:
I had heard through the grapevine (wine pun alert!) that Artéis & Co. champagnes were just as good as Krug and the other big expensive names and at half the price. I visited them out in Champagne and we agreed to work together; we both had the same view about honesty with consumers on the subjects of sustainability and where/how grapes are sourced. Plus their wines are by far the best value I have tried – intense, rich and complex, they are not for the faint-hearted!

The long time spent on the lees (dead yeast) gives Artéis’ cuvées their trademark richness, weight and body, as well as a complex array of savoury aromas and flavours. The textural intensity is balanced by elegance, precision and minerality, for wines that are both mature and full of vitality. The wines are released immediately after disgorgement for a full appreciation of the results of the ‘living development’ that results from lees ageing.

Wanderlust Wine, in collaboration with Artéis & Co., currently offers bespoke bottles, labels, and your own disgorgement profile, with a minimum order quantity of only 300 bottles. If interested, please contact us to arrange a tasting and trip to the cave in France.
