Historical Roots and Evolution
The origins of Vini Santa Lucia trace back to 1628 when Marc’Antonio Perrone, an ancestor, held feudal ducats over the region now known as Corato. This long-standing connection to the land laid the foundation for the vineyard’s enduring presence. The Santa Lucia district, where the winery cultivates its vines, is renowned for its indigenous varieties, including Nero di Troia for red wines, Bombino Nero for rosé, and Fiano for white wines.
Significant modernisation occurred in the 1990s, including adopting 95% native vines and expanding exports to the international market.
Modern Practices and Philosophy
Entering the third millennium, Vini Santa Lucia, under the supervision of enologist Paolo Caciorgna and agronomist Alfredo Tocchini, embarked on a project to enhance the quality of Apulian vines. This initiative led to positive technical outcomes and international acclaim.
Since 2010, Vini Santa Lucia has been a proud member of FIVI (Italian Federation of Independent Viticulturists), reflecting its commitment to independent and sustainable viticulture. The winery firmly believes in preserving the environment and sustaining the territory, recognising that a healthy ecosystem is crucial for producing high-quality wines and securing a dignified future for the next generations.
Organic Practices and Sustainable Viticulture
Vini Santa Lucia has practised organic agriculture since 2009, with all wines certified from the 2016 harvest onward. Green manure, emergency watering, and organic fertilisation are employed to maintain soil health and biodiversity.
The decision to adopt organic farming reflects Vini Santa Lucia’s dedication to respecting the environment. By forgoing pesticides and chemicals, the winery fosters a balanced ecosystem that supports the health of surrounding plants, animals, and insects. This approach, though more labour-intensive and has a higher risk of pest infection, ensures all wines are made responsibly and with the highest quality.
Vineyards and Vinification
The vineyards of Vini Santa Lucia are situated west of Corato at an elevation of 250 meters above sea level. Spread across four fields—Melograno, Santa Lucia, Tufaroli, and Castigliola—these vineyards cover approximately 15 hectares. The farming system employs a high espalier with a single Guyot, featuring 5,600 plants per hectare, ensuring a high leaf-to-grape ratio and low production per plant. This meticulous cultivation method enhances the quality and structure of the grapes.
Vini Santa Lucia’s dedication to organic and sustainable viticulture, its historical legacy and innovative practices, position the estate as a distinguished producer of exceptional Apulian wines. Through a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, the winery continues to honour its roots while paving the way for a sustainable future in winemaking.
