Mendoza, Argentina

Unveiling the elegance of Argentina’s vineyards by Château La Coste

Situated more than 10,000 kilometres from Aix-en-Provence in the South of France, Patrick McKillen, the founder of Château La Coste, found his passion in another winery on the other side of the world in 2010. This new property found its home in Argentina, a prominent country in New World wine production, specifically in the esteemed province of Mendoza. Renowned for its high-altitude terroirs, this vineyard spans 700 hectares, spread across three distinct terroirs — Alto Agrelo, Gualtallary, and Los Chacayes — reaching elevations up to 1700 meters above sea level.

Interesting fact: The vineyard of Argentina was formed with the conquest of Europeans in the 16th century, especially under the religious orders who had to cultivate the vine to produce mass wine. Since the 19th century, the region of Mendoza has been identified among the best Argentine wine terroirs for its topography, geology and climate.

La Coste de Los Andes

Over the years, Mendoza has been identified among Argentina’s finest wine terroirs, tracing back to the 19th century. Embracing French viticulture methods and grape varieties imported from Europe, Mendoza benefits from its intense sunlight, minimal rainfall, and significant day-to-night temperature difference to produce grapes with exceptional quality. The slow ripening process also cultivates wines with immense aromatic complexity.

The vineyard has been certified organic since 2014. The estate is committed to environmentally sustainable viticulture, exemplifying a philosophy rooted in preserving and respecting its diverse terroirs. The mountainous climate, coupled with varied terroirs, contributes to the wines’ complexity, elegance, and concentration.

The vineyard is managed under the guidance of Lucas Gimenéz, the new-generation oenologist. Drawing from experiences spanning both the harvest at Château La Coste in Provence (August-September) and the Argentine estate (February-March), Gimenéz significantly enriches the team’s winemaking knowledge in Mendoza.

The vineyard’s commitment to sustainability extends seamlessly into the winery. Meticulous manual harvesting and strict grape selection are followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks, concrete eggs, and French oak barrels. This precise control over vineyards and production consistently upholds a high level of wine quality.

From the Mendoza vineyard, the wine showcases the terroir of sandy and clay soil, with vines aged over 15 years. Known for their powerful yet elegant palate, also exhibit a long, smooth finish, embodying minerality and a well-balanced mouthfeel.
