Interesting fact: The Mourat family’s connection to wine dates back to the 17th century, when they were wine and salt makers on Ré Island, an island situated between Bordeaux and Nantes. In the 19th century, the family established a wine and spirits merchant business after settling in Les Sables d’Olonne.

In 1974, Jean Mourat founded the vineyard that would eventually become Château Marie du Fou. His son Jérémie joined him in 1998, continuing the family tradition while establishing two additional estates: Clos Saint-André in 2006 and Moulin Blanc in 2011. Over the years, the Mourat family has expanded their vineyards to cover 170 hectares in the Fiefs Vendéens appellation, overlooking the Lay Valley in Vendée.
Following his father’s footsteps, Jérémie focused on preserving his land. His vision is working the land with respect to the soil, as he sees soil is the key element of growing quality fruits. On the field, the team pays the utmost attention to their vines and environment based on the seasons. Today, the Mourat family practices organic farming across all their estates, with some vineyards in the process of converting to organic certification.
In the winery, J. Mourat combines traditional and modern winemaking techniques. This approach allows them to respect the unique characteristics of each vineyard plot. Their vinification process is meticulous, with advanced plot-by-plot techniques and rigorous quality control from the vineyard to the bottle. This ensures that each bottle of J. Mourat wine meets the highest standards of quality and authenticity.
One of J. Mourat’s notable innovations is the Nain de Jardin (Garden Gnomes) range. This collection breaks away from the traditional AOCs of Vendée, offering wines that are more playful and less conventional. The Nain de Jardin range is designed to introduce wine enthusiasts to local grape varieties through modern, approachable wines. Certified for Organic Agriculture, these wines are made without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, reflecting the Mourat family’s commitment to sustainable practices. The Nain de Jardin wines are meant to be shared and enjoyed in a casual, garden-like setting, serving as a stepping-stone to more complex local crus. They have also extended their range with Bag-in-Box format, wines packaged in a more sustainable format with a lower price tag!
