In 2005, Austrian Andrej Razumovsky and his Swiss cousin André Hoffmann embarked on a journey to establish Alpamanta in Mendoza. With deep-rooted winemaking traditions from both of their families, they shared a passion for viticulture and a commitment to sustainable practices led to the birth of Alpamanta, a name derived from the indigenous Quechua language meaning “love for the earth.” This philosophy underscores every facet of their operations, emphasising a harmonious relationship between the ecosystem and its people.
The Core Principle: Biodynamic viticulture
At 950 meters above sea level, this 35-hectare vineyard thrives with the blessing of approximately 340 days of sunshine annually. The vineyard benefits from pure water sourced from the melting ice of the Andes, delivered through a drip irrigation system that underscores the winery’s dedication to water conservation.
Biodynamic practices at Alpamanta are meticulously designed to respect and enhance the soil’s biodiversity. The winery produces its biodynamic preparations using medicinal herbs, minerals, and animal-derived compounds to invigorate the vineyard’s vitality and fertility. By avoiding soil ploughing and refraining from chemically synthesized substances, the team ensures the preservation of indigenous species and the overall health of the vineyard ecosystem.
Sustainability extends beyond the vineyard. Alpamanta has implemented a photovoltaic project comprising 250 solar panels, generating approximately 50% of the energy used in their operations. Additionally, the winery recycles 100% of its industrial water, reintegrating it into the ecosystem through irrigation, and maintains a comprehensive waste classification and recycling program.
In the UK, Argentinian wine, particularly Malbec, enjoys a strong and positive reputation. Over the past decade, it has become a go-to red wine for many consumers, synonymous with quality, richness, and exceptional value. At Wanderlust Wine, we see Alpamanta as embodying all these qualities while adding an extra layer of distinction — sustainable winemaking that truly reflects in the quality of the wines. The “Natal” range offers an easy-drinking, everyday option, while the “Alpamanta” range caters to those seeking a more refined, oak-aged, and mature expression of Argentinian wine.
