Vintage Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selectzione “San Lorenzo” 2011

£68.50

Known for the elegance, freshness, innate intensity and depth of its wines, critic Antonio Galloni has one stated, “Tuscan estate Castello di Ama has crafted some of the most riveting wines in Tuscany… Simply put, there are few estates in Italy at this level.”

Owners Lorenza Sebasti and Marco Pallanti have been making wines here since the 1970s, around the hamlet of Ama, perched 450-550 metres above sea level. Castello di Ama is known for their commitment to excellence, which they believe begins in the vineyards. This is shown through respect and care for the land, manual processing of the grapes, and very low yields per acre to produce world class wines!

Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is named after the picturesque San Lorenzo valley viewed from the estate’s eighteenth-century Villa Pianigiani and Villa Ricucci. The wine is produced from the finest grapes grown in the historic vineyards Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo and Montebuoni.

The 2011 San Lorenzo is loaded tight with ripe fruit nuances of strawberry, black fruit and prune. San Lorenzo shows a riper, jammy quality of fruit next to Vigneto Bellavista. But, like that other Gran Selezione expression, this wine excels in terms of mouthfeel with polished tannins and a great sense of energy and momentum. The 2011 vintage was a solar year, with ample sunshine allowing this wine’s profile to be more expressive and generous.
