“Bogan” is an Aussie slang term for a person whose speech, appearance, attitude, and behaviour are casual or unsophisticated. But underneath, they are intelligent, pride in where they are from, and a quick willingness to regale you with stories and tales. As an Australian in the heart of the Old World, Burgundy, this is a label Mark has always wanted to create. It allows him to play around with different styles and blends, a wine where he doesn’t need to follow the rules because a Bogan seldom does what he is told at the end of the day.
The 2022 A Bogan in Bogandy is a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir. It has a vibrant purple color when poured into a glass. The aroma is characterised by fresh and wild berries with a hint of pepper from Pinot Noir and crunchiness from Gamay. The ripe yet fresh palate of this wine makes it very approachable and easy to like – an unpretentious and expressive bottle that perfectly captures the playful spirit of Bogan in Bogandy.
This is the same wine as Mark Haisma’s Coteaux Bourguignons, just with a different (more fun!) label.
