Tempranillo
Tempranillo is the most famous red grape variety in Spain where it is mostly known for its dominant contribution to Rioja, and it’s also hugely popular in Portugal. It comes under many synonyms such as Tinta Roriz and Aragonéz. It has high levels of acidity and tannins which lend it well to oak ageing, influencing the Rioja maturation system, with classifications based on time in oak (a minimum of 12 months). This results in smooth, full-bodied tempranillo wines marked by cedar, spice, vanilla, and rich wood notes.
Throughout Spain and Portugal, you will find many distinct expressions of tempranillo wine from youthful, fruit-driven styles with fresh red berries, to deeper, structured versions showing stewed dark fruits and earthy complexity. It can even produce a fragrant, delicate rosé. At Wanderlust Wine, our tempranillo wines showcase this incredible versatility, ideal for everything from tapas nights to robust Mediterranean feasts. Whether you enjoy it young or oak-matured, Tempranillo remains a timeless classic in the world of fine red wines.
