A Modern Expression of Irpinia’s Ancient Vines.
Macchie Santa Maria is a family-run winery in the heart of Campania’s Irpinia region. Founded in 2010 by Oreste De Santis, his vision was shaped by a childhood spent among the vines, absorbing the rhythms of the land and the stories of previous generations. With the support of his family, he revitalised 50-year-old vineyards, transforming them into a modern estate that respects the past while embracing sustainable practices.
Location: Campaia, Italy

Macchie Santa Maria cultivates indigenous grape varieties across Montemiletto, Montefusco, Santa Paolina, and Lapio. The vineyards benefit from volcanic soils, varied elevations, and favourable microclimates. Key varietals include Aglianico, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, and Falanghina. The estate practices sustainable viticulture and in organic conversion, the team avoid herbicides and chemical agents to maintain the health of the vines and the integrity of the land.
At Macchie Santa Maria, the belief is that great wine begins in the vineyard. The winemaking process combines traditional methods with modern technology to produce wines that express the unique characteristics of Irpinia. Fermentations are carefully managed to preserve the natural flavours of the grapes, and ageing occurs in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels, depending on the wine’s profile.
