The story of Famille Perrin spans more than a century and five generations. Originating at Château de Beaucastel, the estate has grown into an emblem of sustainable, terroir-driven winemaking in Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape and the broader Southern Rhône. Famille Perrin’s Wines
In 1909, Pierre Tramier acquired the historic Château de Beaucastel. His son‑in‑law Pierre Perrin, followed by grandson Jacques Perrin, nurtured the vineyards and shaped their reputation. Today, the estate is stewarded by the fifth generation. From the outset, one belief tied the family together—an unwavering respect for the terroir and a belief that the best wines emerge from sustainable vineyards.
Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape may be the jewel in their crown, but their expansion reaches beyond. The Perrin family now manage over 300 hectares across the Southern Rhône, including specialist estates in Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Tavel. Their footprint reflects an intimate understanding of the region’s clay-limestone soils, steep slopes and water-retentive terroir, ideal for producing powerful, elegant wines infused with Southern Rhône characters.
From the 1950s, Château de Beaucastel led the way in organic viticulture, and by 1974, biodynamics was introduced. These practices have since become core to the family’s philosophy: minimal intervention, ecological stewardship and bringing vineyards back to balance. They emphasise holistic cultivation, using natural preparations, promoting biodiversity, and protecting soils.
This ethos extends to every aspect of the business. L’Oustalet, the family’s restaurant in Gigondas, holds both a Michelin star and a Green Michelin Star, a recognition of its commitment to sustainable sourcing, local ingredients and eco-conscious practices.
The Perrin family believes that sustainability and innovation should go hand in hand. Their current renovation project at Château de Beaucastel is a statement of this philosophy: building new cellar spaces almost entirely underground, using local materials and energy systems that harmonise with the landscape.
Key features include:
- Earth-integrated architecture: New cellars are carved from excavated earth, using local clay and aggregate to maintain harmony with the environment.
- Passive cooling: Rainwater captured on-site feeds cool cellars, while the Mistral wind naturally regulates cellar temperatures to save energy and preserve freshness.
- Self-sufficient energy: Rooftop solar and biofuel cogeneration from vineyard prunings generate over 95% of the estate’s energy needs.
This is more than “green building”—it’s a sustainable winemaking philosophy in practice.
