Jewellers’ work with Piedmontese gems

A strong passion for the specificity and excellence of the different Piedmontese grapes and terroirs is the main driver behind Le Strette, a project founded by brothers Mauro e Savio Daniele. Their aim was to use both the passion for wine they inherited from their parents and their formal education as oenologists to claim their place among the best producers in Barolo.

Our pick of the best wine from this producer: Nas-cëtta

Interesting fact: Le Strette is one of only seven producers still growing the historical Nas-cëtta grape variety and to produce Langhe DOC Nas-cëtta del Comune di Novello wines. Nas-cëtta was almost forgotten, vinified only as part of blends for domestic consumption, when Elvio Cogno and Le Strette’s Savio Daniele, started working to recover the vineyards and do thorough genetic profiling. After a lot of hard work and intense lobbying, they managed to get proper recognition for the grape and the specificity of the Novello terroir: in 2010 the DOC Langhe Nas-cëtta del Comune di Novello was finally recognised.

Le Strette Wines

Mauro and Savio Daniele founded Le Strette in 1997 and their goal was clear: to claim a place among the best Barolo producers. The essential ingredients were all there from the very beginning: a strong passion for wine, passed on by their parents Giulio and Giuliana; formal education and extensive experience as oenologists and winemakers; a local partner, Gino Lagorio, with deep knowledge of the region; outstanding understanding of Piedmont’s terroir and indigenous grapes.

Twenty three years on they have not only achieved their goal but also set the bar higher for all the grapes they vinify and the multiple DOCs and MGAs (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive – a geographical certification that is even more strict that DOCG) they work under:

  • Barolo DOCG – Bergera-Pezzole MGA, Corini-Pallaretta MGA and Bergeisa MGA.
  • Langhe DOC Nas-cëtta del Comune di Novello (a DOC created through the efforts of Savio himself)
  • Langhe Nebbiolo
  • Barbera d’Alba
  • Dolcetto d’Alba

Mauro and Savio work under careful sustainability standards, both in the vineyards and in the cellar. They have thoroughly profiled their different ‘crus’ on the hills around Novello so as to understand how each of them brings out the best expression of the historically grown grapes. Without herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilisers, the most important part of their work is to produce the best fruit for each wine. In the cellar, humidity and temperature are naturally controlled by integrating traditional methods and materials (such as ‘tufo’) in the modern-built facilities.
