Interesting fact: Folc may be young at heart, but they aren’t afraid to take on the industry leaders and they have got the awards to prove it. In 2021, they were awarded a Gold medal at the Independent English Wine Awards and took home one of the only two medals for still English rosé at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. Along with two further silver medals from WineGB and the International Wine Challenge competitions, they’re now the highest scoring still English rosé in the country.

Folc is a bit of a different story, starting in 2019 with couple Elisha Rai and Tom Cannon realizing that very few English estates produced the type of Provence-style, summer rosés that many of us enjoy come Spring and Summer days. Taking the matter into their own hands, they went ahead and launched Folc, a delicious dry rosé, best described as “Summer in a glass.”

Sourcing high-quality grapes from select UK vineyard sites and finding the perfect winemaking facility in Defined Wine (Canterbury, Kent), Elisha and Tom were set to create their own rosé label. The first production took place with the 2019 vintage; initially a  small production, as the founders wanted to make sure they were able to craft an outstanding rosé while assessing their new concept. The following year, in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown, Folc managed to grow in production, with the help from Head Winemaker Nick Lane and Assistant Winemaker Poppy Seeley at Defined Wine. Their vineyards selection grew with sites Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, and Suffolk. The grapes used in their rosé blend include both traditional grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, as well as heritage varieties like Bacchus, Kerner and Rondo.

Both very enthusiastic about the English wine movement, Elisha and Tom left behind fast-paced city jobs at the age of 30 to pursue their dream: making a Provence-style rosé in the heart of the Kentish countryside. Fast forward to 2022, they are now getting into their third vintage, with Folc rosé gaining the recognition it deserves. For the first couple of years, Folc sold most of their wine through their website, with a few local farm shops and independent wine merchants distributing it as well. As the brand continues to grow, as shown by the various wine awards they’ve already won, the Folc rosé is becoming increasingly available to all who love an outstanding UK rosé. We, at Wanderlust, are delighted to offer Folc’s rosé through our shop and our partners’ restaurants and bars.

Folc strives to make a deliciously simple, dry wine that people feel comfortable enjoying and sharing with friends and family. This rosé is a non-pretentious wine that delivers incredible freshness, smooth texture, and fruit qualities that rivals the great Provence rosés. Sustainability is also at the forefront of every decision the founders make. The vineyards are carefully worked to produce high-quality grapes that are hand-picked at harvest. Their winery in Canterbury one of the few wineries accredited with the WineGB Sustainability Scheme. The Folc rosé has a lovely depth, a refreshing acidity mixed with a smooth texture resulting from malolactic fermentation. Perfect for the summer!

Looking ahead, Folc is working on a sparkling rosé and another rosé label, a more gastronomic wine, with greater structure and food-friendly characteristics, using a higher percentage of heritage grape varieties. Lots to look forward to with this exciting pink wine brand!
