Located in the heart of France’s Pays Nantais region, Domaine Bretaudeau is the creation of Jérôme Bretaudeau, an innovative winemaker who has gained recognition for his fresh approach to organic and biodynamic viticulture and his dedication to producing distinctive, terroir-driven wines. Not only in France but internationally, wine enthusiasts and critics recognise the originality and quality of his wines over the years.

Location: Pays Nantais, The Loire Valley, France

Total area under vine: 12 hectares

Viticultural standards: Organic and Biodynamic certified

Interesting fact: Jérôme Bretaudeau produces wines not only from Melon de Bourgogne but also from varieties like Pinot Noir and Merlot, which are not officially authorized in the appellation. Hence, most of his wines are labeled as Vin de France, since the only official white wine made from Melon de Bourgogne in the region is Muscadet.

Jérôme Bretaudeau: An Experimental Winemaker

Jérôme Bretaudeau is widely regarded as one of the most innovative winemakers in The Loire Valley. Started working in vineyards since 15, he developed a deep appreciation for viticulture and the potential of the region’s terroir. He launched Domaine de Bellevue in 2005, after years of working with other winemakers. Since then, he has built a reputation for challenging conventions in Pays Nantais by experimenting with grape varieties and vinification techniques rarely seen in the region.

Vineyards and Varieties

Spans 12 hectares of vineyards located on the schist-rich soils of the Loire Valley, particularly suited to the region’s flagship grape, Melon de Bourgogne. However, Jérôme’s vision goes far beyond. In addition to Melon de Bourgogne, he has introduced nonnative varieties like Pinot Noir, and even Merlot —an unusual choice in a region predominantly focused on white wines.

His vineyard is divided into small parcels, each are carefully managed organically and biodynamically. The microclimates within his parcels and his willingness to embrace new varieties offer a fresh perspective on the potential of the Loire Valley’s terroir.

Winemaking Philosophy and Techniques

Known for his experimental techniques, he vinifies wines using a range of vessels, including concrete eggs, amphorae, and stainless steel tanks, each chosen to bring out different expressions in the wine. He is constantly exploring new techniques to enhance the expression of his wines, blending tradition with modernity in a way that respects the history of Pays Nantais while pushing its boundaries. The use of amphorae, for instance, allows for extended skin contact and promotes a complex textural quality, particularly in his white wines.

A notable example of Bretaudeau’s innovative approach is his “Statera Pinot Noir”, an experimental Pinot Noir aged in oak cask for 14 months. The wine reveals peony and rose on the nose, with cherries and strawberries bursting on the palate Elegant and pure, with a lively and crisp juicy core of red fruit and a seductive finish. One that showcases the potential of Pays Nantais beyond the traditional varietal – Melon de Bourgogne.

Style of Wines

Jérôme Bretaudeau’s wines are known for their purity, complexity, and distinctive minerality. His whites, especially those made from Melon de Bourgogne, often exhibit a vibrant acidity and layered flavours, ranging from citrus to stone fruits, with a notable saline finish that speaks to the maritime influence of the Loire region. The Statera, in particular, has received acclaim for its textural richness and intense minerality, offering a new perspective on the region.

Jérôme Bretaudeau represents a new wave of winemaking in Pays Nantais— one that blends tradition with experimentation and sustainability. Through his dedication to organic and biodynamic practices, innovative use of winemaking techniques, and exploration of uncommon grape varieties, Jérôme has crafted wines that are truly reflective of their terroir and distinctively original, whether vibrant and mineral-driven whites or elegant, nuanced reds, offer a fresh perspective on the region’s possibilities.
