Re-establishing ancient vineyards on the sun-kissed slopes of Ibiza
Blacknose is the wine brand of brothers Peter and Tino Lehner, produced on their beautiful property in the northern mountains of Sant Joan de Labritja, Ibiza. Commonly associated with the successful tourism industry, the Balearic Islands also have a long and rich tradition of producing wine going back many centuries. The Blacknose vineyards are perfectly positioned on ancient, purpose-built terraces. At the highest altitude for vines on the island, they produce stunning and unique red wines.

Interesting fact: The name derives from the Blacknose sheep, an extraordinary breed of half-wild sheep (Schwarznasenschafe) originating from the Lötschen Valley where the Lehner family story began. It locates upstream along the Rhone River in the canton of Valais in Switzerland, also famous for producing some of the best wine in the country.

If you asked most people what is famous from the Balearic Island of Ibiza, you would likely be told good vibes and good times.
And mostly they would be right! When tourism really gripped the island in the 1970s, most agricultural activity on the island was abandoned in favour of the rapid growth of tourism. Over the years, most terraces and lands had been overtaken by pine trees.
One May evening in 2011, an accident created a huge fire that burned down all the pine trees and juniper bushes within 1,500 hectares. The property of the Swiss brothers, Peter and Tino Lehner, was right in the middle of the devastation. Whilst excavating the debris of the fire, they discovered many ancient dry-stone walls revealing a link to a past of winemaking and olive oil production. They decided to re-establish the agricultural heritage on their land by replanting vineyards and olive groves.
Beginning with 2 years of regenerative agriculture, the brothers now manage over 7,000 vines and 100 olive trees on these ancient “muros secos” dry-stone terraces.
At 320m, they planted the highest vineyards in Ibiza since 2014, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in 2016, then by an indigenous white variety called Giró Roz in 2020. The production of wine and olive oil across the 5-hectare site is organically certified, with biodynamic conversion since 2021. They also use solar energy to generate power and collect water in tanks from the roofs and terraces of the finca.
The handpicked grapes are manually selected on the sorting table, followed by pre-maceration, maceration and fermentation processes in temperature-controlled Inox steel tanks for maximum quality control. The wine is then finished in used French oak barrels for 12-15 months which adds a fine hint of clove and fried bacon to the ripe red fruits.
Sa Tanca des Cotxu winery, where they produce the Blacknose wines, is in the mountains of Sant Joan de Labritja, North of the Island.
Visitors can try their micro cuvée “Blacknose” red blend at some of the finest restaurants on the island, or at the brothers’ visitor centre and tasting room high in the hills.
