Alvaredos-Hobbs

Driving the reinvigoration of Alvaredos through wines.
Alvaredos-Hobbs emerges from a partnership that took root in 2015 when renowned vintner Paul Hobbs met Antonio López Fernández in a remote village in Galicia’s northwest region of Spain. Their initial encounter led them to explore the vineyards, discovering the untapped potential in the ancient sites. This shared vision forged a lifelong partnership as they journeyed back to Madrid, driven by their mutual desire to bring the land’s heritage back to life again.

Located in the heart of Galicia, Alvaredos-Hobbs finds its home where the River Sil winds through the wild landscape. The vineyards are perched on steep (15-55% steepness), sun-drenched and south-facing slopes of Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras, benefiting from the cool maritime influences of the nearby Atlantic Ocean. With elevations reaching up to 450m, it shelters the vines from excessive rain, fostering an extended growing season. All these factors are ideal for indigenous varieties like Godello and Mencia.
“Alvaredos-Hobbs supports the revitalization of Alvaredos and other disappearing villages of the Galician province.”
Alvaredos is a village with a deep agricultural heritage where grapes, chestnuts, and olives have been planted for a long history. Positioned along the winter route of the historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, Alvaredos-Hobbs stands as a testament to the region’s historical significance.
In support of Alvaredos and other fading Galician villages, Alvaredos-Hobbs practised “heroic viticulture” in the area, hiring those who live in the region to take care of the vineyard of their indigenous varieties such as Godello, Loureiro, Albariño, Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, and Souson.
The winery is a combination of the old and the new, seamlessly combining four original stone houses to preserve the exterior’s historic charm while embracing modern winemaking practices inside. Sustainable construction techniques, like natural cork insulation and energy-efficient lighting, harmoniously blend with original chestnut beams and stones from Antonio’s grandfather’s original bodega, embodying a true fusion of tradition and innovation. Their first vintage was bottled in 2018, in which Alvaredos-Hobbs pays tribute to the region’s rich history through wines.
Alvaredos-Hobbs stands as a collaborative testament to the shared passion of two individuals—Paul Hobbs and Antonio López Fernández—who recognised the unexplored potential of Galicia’s ancient vineyards. Through their dedication, the winery not only produces exceptional wines but also honours the heritage and traditions deeply rooted in the terraced slopes of this remarkable region.
