Domaine Albert Boxler

Alsace, France

Humble yet incredibly exciting domaine from Alsace.

The Boxler family established their roots in the ancient village of Niedermorschwihr, located just outside Colmar in Alsace, back in 1673. Originally, they began as vine growers and produced wine solely for their own family’s enjoyment. It wasn’t until 1946 that Albert Boxler bottled their first commercialised vintage. Today, after three generations, Jean Boxler is the driving force behind this prestigious family business.

Location: Alsace, France

Total area under vine:  13.5 hectares

Average production: Around 65,000 bottles per year

Interesting fact: Today, the wine still wears the same label drawn by Albert Boxler’s cousin in 1946, when they bottled the first commercialised vintage.

Jean Boxler

The Boxler family’s history dates back to the 17th century when they relocated from Switzerland and settled in Alsace in 1673. Following the Second World War, Albert Boxler returned to the family property in Niedermorschwihr from Montana to harvest in 1946. He was the first in his family to bottle their production and market it under the family name.

Alsace wine region

The Boxler family is dedicated to sustainable viticulture and employs organic methods to promote healthy vine growth and grape development. The entire vineyard is planted in terraces on very steep slopes over 13.5 hectares, making manual work of the vine very difficult but essential. They cultivate a variety of Alsatian noble grape varietals including 40% riesling, 20% pinot gris, 20% Gewurztraminer, and a mix of other Alsatian grape varieties, with some vines over 65 years old. Notably, the family owns 4 hectares of Grand Cru Sommerberg and 2 hectares of Grand Cru Brand.

The winemaking process for Boxler’s wines remains unchanged for centuries, with vinification and ageing taking place in old foudres in a cellar beneath the family home until bottling.

From vibrant whites to nuanced reds, their wines are always consistent in quality and embody the region’s rich heritage. Their Rieslings showcase remarkable purity, with expressive aromatics and a crisp, mineral-driven palate.
