Jean-Louis Chave has a gift for crafting absolutely transcendent Hermitage. This is partly achieved because the Chave family owns the best parcels in Hermitage and St Joseph, from which he blends with unparalleled skill. He’s quite rightly a Wine Icon and undoubtedly one of the few top producers in the Northern Rhône.
We have managed to secure only a few bottles of the 2008 vintage of his second label Hermitage, ‘Farconnet’, which is now superbly mature. Many argue this wine is the best value of his whole range and to have a small amount of a back vintage is very rare indeed (we took the last few bottles from a private collector’s cellar). Now nearly 15 years old, the wine has developed into a delicious and massively complex array of fruit (both fresh, poached, and dried) but also tertiary flavours of cured meat, leather and a touch of smokiness. The nose is wild and will keep changing once opened with wonderful herbaceous and floral notes. The finesse and precision of this wine stands out all the way through to its very long finish. Incredible value for money when you see what the step up is to the top parcel of Chave Hermitage.
