As one of the world’s greats and New Zealand’s biodynamic pioneer, Felton Road are well worthy of their Wine Icon status.
This Chardonnay comes from their hallowed Elms plot, the estate’s original vineyard planted by Felton Road’s first owner, Stuart Elms. At 8 years of age, it is a rare specimen showing how well the Felton Road wines can evolve and mature.
Despite this its age it retains incredible freshness, liveliness and youthfulness. In the glass, it is a light lemon colour and has Burgundian nose with lightly reduced oakiness – but still fresh as a daisy as if just a year or two old. On the palate, the wine is a gentle, sublime layered journey of creamy lemon with rich, elegant and round mouthfeel. The oak is superbly integrated, supported by the citrus zing and vibrant acidity. With a touch more ripeness than what you’d expect from a French counterpart, this Chardonnay performs to an amazing standard after years of gentle ageing and is a prime example of the New Zealand terroir it hails from.
