Vintage Au Bon Climat Sandford and Benedict Pinot 2009

Founded in 1982, Au Bon Climat (which means “a well-exposed vineyard”) produces internationally acclaimed Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. In California’s top producers, these guys really are a superb producer to see how good Californian Pinot can be. Today, the Sandford and Benedict plot holds the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the USA. These silica-based soils produce a more earthy expression of Pinot Noir with huge complexity, often rated as California’s best effort to make Burgundy level quality wines. Between the history and the amazing quality of the fruit, many consider this site deserving of the USAs only “Grand Cru” status.

Well, this is certainly a rare parcel of wine. We bought this from a private collector where it sat for over 10 years ageing gracefully in a bonded warehouse. 6 bottles only – when it’s gone, it’s gone!

At this age, 2009 really is showing its best; it has had time to mature and come of age and will be showing developed as well as fresh fruit flavours. The wine has a ton of layering of flavours including sweet red cherry, blood orange, and mint infuses with a racy, richness of redcurrants, blackberries, ground herbs, and spices. Still, throughout this wine is an underpinning earthy element with gentle minerality to wrap it all together. It is gentle yet rich, has a great texture, solid mid-palate depth, and a beautiful long and supremely elegant finish.
