Vintage Au Bon Climat Sandford and Benedict Chardonnay 2009

£75.00

Founded in 1982, Au Bon Climat (which means “a well-exposed vineyard”) produces internationally acclaimed Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. These guys really are a superb producer and show just how good Californian Chardonnay can be. Today, the Sandford & Benedict plot holds the oldest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in the USA. These silica-based soils produce a more robust expression of Chardonnay with huge complexity, often rated as California’s best effort to make Burgundy-level quality wines. Considering the history and amazing quality of the fruit it yields, many consider this site deserving of the USAs only “Grand Cru” status.

Well, this is certainly a rare parcel of wine. We bought this from a private collector where it sat for over 10 years ageing gracefully in a bonded warehouse. 6 bottles only – when it’s gone, it’s gone!

At this age, it has had time to mature and come of age and will be showing developed as well as fresh fruit flavours. The wine has a ton of layering of flavours including preserved lemon, waxy fruits, rich cedar and now due to the age a touch of almond nuttiness. An amazing backbone and underpinning minerality wrap it all together. It is gentle yet rich, has a great texture and depth. Solid mid-palate and a beautifully long and supremely elegant finish.
