Founded in 1982, Au Bon Climat (which means “a well-exposed vineyard”) produces internationally acclaimed Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. In California’s top producers, these guys really are a superb producer to see how good Californian wine can be. Even when ripe, oaky Chardonnays were all the rage in the noughties, Au Bon Climat stuck to a more subtle and refined style, with minerality and intensity.
The 2019 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is a beautiful example of the Au Bon Climat style. Burgundian in sensibility but with California style is one way of describing Jim Clendenen’s Chardonnays. Structure and restraint balanced with elegance and opulence is another. This barrel-fermented, full-bodied Chardonnay has a buttery brioche entry which then mingles with tropical and stone fruits and palate-cleansing citrus fruits to a bright finish. It will become richer and more complex with age, lasting at least 10 years.
