Adam Sabelli-Frisch works with some of the oldest vines in America. He takes these rare old plantings and makes the wine in an urban winery in Los Angeles. Alicante Bouschet is one of the very rare varietals in the USA; it was planted heavily during Prohibition in California for export to the East Coast (due to its thick skin made it resistant to rot during the transportation process). The fruit is from old plantings in a sustainably farmed low-impact vineyard in San Joaquin County that has produced award-winning Alicante Bouschet for years.
The nose of this wine has a beautiful ‘high-toned’ elegance to it with flavours of dark cherry mixed with blackcurrant cassis jumping out of the glass. The palate is juicy and perfectly formed, packed with black fruits, vanilla pod, fruits of the forest, coffee and cocoa and a touch of alpine herbs. 15 months in old oak barrels has made this wine very complex with a light-on-its-feet 12.7% ABV; balanced, elegant and a superb expression of Alicante Bouschet.
