Castro Candaz, one of Raul Perez’s boutique collaborations, is a partnership with Rodrigo Méndez, himself a famous winemaker in Ribeira Sacra. The project focuses on different expressions of the region’s queen red grape, Mencía, grown on Lugo’s granite and slate soils.
Finca el Curvado uses fruit from around the village of La Chantada, fermented naturally and with whole clusters in big oak vessels. The gentle wineaking seeks balance, elegance and the maximum expression of the grapes and land.
Quintessential Mencía nose, with delicate aromas of Mediterrnaean dried herbs, cranberry and Morello cherries. On the palate it is vibrant and subtle with very fine tannins. Fresh, balanced and soft, with flavours of red fruits, topped by gentle smokiness and spice. Gentle acidity driving it to the long finish.
