An academic and philosopher before becoming a winemaker, Patrick Baudouin is a Loire maverick often referred to as ‘poet of terroir’. His wines are best described as ‘untamed’ and really express the specific plot they hail from. They are not manipulated or massaged into a style; they are wild in nature yet precise and clean in the glass. Quality is everything to Patrick and all grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted so that only the best fruit goes into his wines.
This wine is named after 1896, the year when winegrowers of the region decided to found an association based on the guiding doctrine that “wine should only be grapes.”
True to Patrick Badouin’s philosophy, this sweet wine is made without added sugar, grapes are harvested by hand and treated gently in the cellar. Elegant, round with refreshing minerality, ripe apricot, peach, honey and a stimulating spice. An excellent, full-bodied wine that is worthy of long consideration. The finish is long, intense with a touch of saline which is balanced by its bright acidity and botrytis flavours.
