This is a dark, layered and balanced wine with beautiful floral rose, bags of savoury fruit and a fresh acid line. The richness of the tannins is what sets this variety apart. Christmas cake, spice and savouriness are provided on the long finish. Best enjoyed over a shared meal (particularly pork) with friends.
Sagrantino is very well known for it’s well planted roots in Umbria, Italy. Italian varietals have shown to grow so well in Australian soil, complemented by the heat and conditions proven to make great classically styles of Aussie wine.

Like a needle in a haystack it’s so hard to find quality and value in Australia, let alone to then have an edge and make incredible wines. Olivers Taranga remains a sixth-generation family business dating back to 1839 when their great great great great Grandparents settled from the UK to start a new life in Australia. They farm 110 hectares of land, planted to many different varieties of red and white wine grapes. Each block is individually nurtured depending on variety, vine age, soil, location, winery requirements and the targeted bottle range. From 1994, some of these low yielding, high quality Australian Shiraz grapes have been processed with some outstanding results, setting the scene for Oliver’s winemaking venture. These aren’t any grapes; year-on-year they are grown for and go into the wines of Penfolds Grange Shiraz & Eileen Hardy Shiraz. Their portfolio consists of a variety of small batch wines such as Fiano, Grenache, Tempranillo and their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon & Australian Shiraz.
Sustainability scope: They were inaugural members of the McLaren Vale Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program. Not biodynamic or organic however no pesticides are used and only organic fungicides. Undervine mowing and grazing sheep in the vineyard over winter are utilised. In terms of winemaking, fermented with wild yeasts in most cases zero acidification. Sulphur is added just prior to bottling in minimal quantities. Vegan friendly wines – no fining is applied.
