Released only in exceptional vintages, the M53 is a rare beast and made in tiny volumes – only three barrels, and this is the second time it has been produced.
The 2014 vintage was warm, and crops were quite low yielding. These tough conditions are perfect for ripening the oldest, 1948 planted Shiraz vines. The concentration on the vine has followed through into the wine, boasting it in its bold, complex and powerful character.
The nose is lifted and perfumed; blackberry essence, smokiness, mulberry, tar, dark chocolate, pepper spice and a touch of toasty brioche from the new French oak used to age it. In the mouth, it is deep, long and complex. Blackberry compote, sweet spices, cherry cola, rum & raisin chocolate finished with fine long lingering tannins, layers and weight.
This wine will age extremely well; in excess of 20 years if stored correctly.
