Mark Haisma is an Aussie who made wine for a long time at the legendary producer, Yarra Yering in Victoria. In 2009 he decided to step up and make more serious wines in the capital of Chardonnay & Pinot – Burgundy! This wine is his foray into
Shiraz in Burgundy? Yes, you read it right. In 2018, Mark and his team planted a tiny parcel of Shiraz in the heart of Burgundy. To help the grapes ripen, they adapted viticulture practices from the Rhône Valley to maximise the sunlight exposure for the Shiraz. These time-consuming works were a lot of effort for a non-classified grape variety in this area, but the team is determined to explore the possibility in the region.
With 18 months of ageing before release, the wine reveals both blackberries, blueberries and pepper notes, while the structure is held up by fresh acidity, medium-strong tannins and a juicy aftertaste.
A wine not to be missed for those who are eager to explore. Not just Shiraz in Burgundy, but also a serious wine, not something you can easily find out there!
