Vintage Howards Folly Carcavelos 1991 (50cl)

£49.50

At over 30 years of age, this stumpy bottle of sweet, fortified wine is rare in many ways. The Carcavelos appellation, north of Lisbon, covers 10 hectares on vineyards only, surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic.
The wine is naturally sweet as alcoholic fermentation was arrested by the addition of grape spirit while there was still some residual sugar. It was then matured in 700 litre oak casks in which oxidative ageing created an incredibly complex wine, combining the best of a tawny Port and of an Oloroso sherry.

Dark amber with aromas of marmalade, raisins, treacle and spicy dried fruits. The palate is amazingly concentrated and complex at once sweet, spicy, luscious and zingy. Expect flavours of candied orange zest, cardamom, star anis, marmalade, coffee, mocca supported by a lively mouth-cleanings acidity. Concentration, purity and intensity are not often seen in such balance. A world-class fortified sweet wine that really is a rare gem!
