Jim Clendenen was famous for producing internationally acclaimed Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in California. Amongst the region’s top producers, the wines he started producing in 1982 set the standard for modern, terroir-driven Californian wine from Burgundian grapes. Wines under the Clendenden Family Vineyards label are not just another label – this was a project of passion for Jim. These are artisan, nuanced wines from small lots producing distinctive wines that have had the luxury to be in the barrel as long as they need it. Long-lived, food-friendly, with firm acidity and moderate alcohol, they are really special parts of Jim’s story that we are honoured to import and represent in the UK.
‘The Pip’ Red Blend is the first ever released red blend in 20 years since the first release of The Clendenen Family Vineyard label. Four varietals were chosen and each was aged for three years in a barrel. The long-term barrel ageing process resulted in a smooth and supple taste, making this wine an excellent value.
The 2019 vintage is a fantastic year in Santa Barbara County for red varietals. This dark red blend has a rich and complex aroma of fresh cherries and spices, with hints of leather, dark chocolate, and truffles as the bouquet opens up. The wine has a broad flavour profile with various types of cherries, including bitter, black, and wild. From the first sip to the bright finish, the intensity of the wine is continuous.
