Blackbook’s “Painter of Light” chardonnay is made from English grapes grown in sunny Essex which allows for ripeness, better balance and overall concentration of flavour. 20% of the wine was aged for one year in new French oak giving subtle cedar characters while working with and lifting the fruit characters in the wine.
The wine is vibrant and textured. It is fruit-forward with citrus and tropical fruits and underlying vibrant lemon acidity and saline notes. Sergio the winemaker in our opinion is very much going down the path of trying to make his chardonnay a British expression of the Burgundy techniques that are hallowed worldwide. It is very well made and whilst drinkable now it will get better and better with a shelf life to be at its best 5-10 years old.
